Those of you who have been to UX London before will know what an important role our volunteer crew play in the proceedings.

They’re the folk in the blue ‘crew’ t-shirts. Those who help welcome you to the event and set you up with your goodie bag and lanyard; those who set up the workshop spaces, answer your questions, show you where the toilets are and set up your breakfast and snacks. They run around like nobody’s business and help out with so many other things behind the scenes that you never see. They are absolute stars.

In return, we aim to offer them a fantastic volunteering experience with access to much of the conference content itself - an experience that they will never forget (and maybe even want to repeat)!

I had the pleasure of working closely with two of this year’s volunteer crew, both of whom declared an interest in all things communications before the event. Lewis and Lorna did a wonderful job supporting the media activities during the conference. Naturally, they have been equally adept with their post-event communications, and have taken to Medium to share their experiences.

The conference is a great opportunity to learn, of course. A carefully considered rota ensures that, alongside conference duties such as registration or checking wristbands, everyone gets to see some talks they’re interested in and take part in some workshops. Setting up workshops means you’re helping out the presenters, so there are chances to actually meet the experts too.
